“My Gentle Dentist Arana Hills have Special Training in Removing Wisdom Teeth under Local Anaesthesia and are Extremely Competent and Quick”

Wisdom Tooth Surgery Overview

Wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical procedure to remove one or more wisdom teeth – the four permanent adult teeth located at the back corners of your mouth top and bottom.

The majority of wisdom teeth can be extracted safely under local anaesthesia.

Note: We believe in avoiding the need for general anaesthesia unless absolutely necessary.

If a wisdom tooth does not have room (impacted wisdom tooth), resulting in pain, infection or other Dental problems, you will likely need to have it taken out.

Note: To prevent future problems some Dentists and Oral Surgeons recommend wisdom tooth extraction even if impacted teeth are not currently causing problems. We will consult with you on the best option for your case.

All About Wisdom Teeth

What are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last permanent teeth to appear (erupt) in the mouth.

Wisdom teeth usually appear between the ages of 17 and 25.

Note: Some people may never develop wisdom teeth.

What are Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

Many people develop impacted wisdom teeth – teeth that do not have enough room to erupt into the mouth or develop normally.

Impacted wisdom teeth may erupt only partially or not at all.

For others, wisdom teeth erupt normally – just as their other molars did – and cause no problems.

What are The Problems with Impacted Wisdom Tooth?

An impacted wisdom tooth may:

  • Grow at an angle toward the next tooth (second molar)
  • Grow at an angle toward the back of the mouth
  • Grow at a right angle to the other teeth, as if the wisdom tooth is “lying down” within the jawbone
  • Grow straight up or down like other teeth but stay trapped within the jawbone.

When Will I Need to Get an Impacted Wisdom Tooth Removed?

You will likely need your impacted wisdom tooth removed if it results in problems such as:

  • Pain
  • Trapping food and debris behind the wisdom tooth
  • Infection or gum disease (periodontal disease)
  • Tooth decay in a partially erupted wisdom tooth
  • Damage to a nearby tooth or surrounding bone
  • Development of a fluid-filled sac (cyst) around the wisdom tooth
  • Complications with orthodontic treatments to straighten over teeth.

Are There Any Alternatives to Removing a Wisdom Tooth?

Removing the gum lying over your tooth (operculectomy) may be possible in certain cases if a wisdom tooth has partly erupted.

If the root of your tooth lies close to the nerve that supplies feeling to your lower lip, it is possible to remove just the crown of your tooth (coronectomy).

How Much Does Wisdom Tooth Surgery Cost?

Wisdom teeth surgery is a very common Dental procedure, but the cost can vary depending on the complexity of the procedure.

Note: My Gentle Dentist will provide you an accurate price for your Wisdom Tooth Surgery once we better understand your situation.

  • Complexity of the surgery
  • The specialist performing the procedure, and
  • The amount covered by your private health insurance (if applicable).

Note: My Gentle Dentist will advise you of all cost involved before performing the procedure.

What Factors Will Impact the Complexity of the Extraction?

My Gentle Dentist will look at 3 things specifically when determining complexity:

  1. The Type of Impaction – soft tissue impaction, partial bony impaction or a complete bony impaction.
  1. The Level that Your Wisdom Teeth are Submerged at – fully erupted, partially covered by gum tissue or completely submerged.
  1. The Presence of Fully Formed Roots – more common with older patients.

How Does the Wisdom Tooth Removal Procedure Work?

There are 2 simple initial steps, and this is:

  1. An initial consultation, and then the
  2. Best course of action will be determined in relation to factors discussed.

X-rays and / or OPG will be performed to examine your Dental and medical history.

Note: The x-ray will help give a closer look at the position of your wisdom teeth and whether they have been erupted or are impacted.

If Surgery is Required: Your Dentist will make recommendations.

From there, you will schedule the procedure with your Dentist.

Note: A post-operative follow up may be required to help with pain management and to ensure you have not developed any infections.

How Long Does the Wisdom Tooth Removal Procedure Take?

The whole procedure can take between 30 and 60 minutes – My Gentle Dentist will always work quickly, safely and effectively.

Wisdom Tooth Surgery Aftercare

After a wisdom tooth removal, you will need to take care and rest for a while.

We highly recommend not driving if you have had any sedation or general anaesthesia and arrange for some help for the next 24 hours or so. However, your Dentist will advise you of specific instructions well before they perform the procedure.

Antibiotics and Painkillers will be recommended for up to a week after surgery. However, your Dentist will advise and prescribe you Medicines that best suit your situation.

Bleeding after surgery is common and will subside after four to five days (ice can be applied immediately after surgery to manage this.

Note: Your Dentist will advise of any possible complication, risks or side effects associated with wisdom teeth removal.

Foods to Eat and Foods to Avoid

Staying hydrated and eating well is important for recovery, though you may not have a very good appetite after surgery.

Ask your Dentist for specific instructions on what you can eat the first few days of recovery.

Focus on food that will be easy to eat without much chewing and food that will not disrupt your blood clot or stitches.

Start with very soft foods at first, such as:

  • Scrambled Eggs
  • Soft Food
  • Pudding
  • Soup
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Smoothies

When eating avoid:

  • Extremely hot food
  • Nuts or seeds that could get stuck in the hole where your wisdom teeth used to be
  • Drinking from a straw, or slurping too vigorously from a spoon, which can dislodge your blood clot or ruin stiches.

If you have any concerns about your treatment, please ask your friendly Dentist at My Gentle Dentist.
